FAQ

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or people with Lou Gehrig’s (ALS).

What are the different parts of Medicare and what do they cover?

Medicare has four parts:
Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offers an alternative to Original Medicare by providing coverage through private insurance companies.
Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

Am I automatically enrolled in Medicare when I turn 65?

If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. If not, you’ll need to sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period.

What if I'm still working at 65 and have health insurance through my employer?

You may have the option to delay enrolling in Medicare without facing penalties if you have qualifying health coverage through your employer or union.
